В серии особенно удачных парных сцен Марлоу предстает перед нами в окружении женщин: он их отбрасывает одну за другой и обращает все внимание на Вивьен. Благодаря ей интрига, рассказанная целиком и полностью с точки зрения Марлоу, все настоятельнее требует его присутствия. Если и есть в этом фильме подлинное движение вперед, оно связано вовсе не с поиском виновного, а с растущей привязанностью сыщика к собственной истории. Сам Хоукс, показывая это движение, неуклонно сохраняет дистанцию. Его как раз забавляет контраст между все более явной вовлеченностью персонажа в расследование (и в любовные отношения) и отстраненностью его самого, рассказчика, от предмета своего рассказа. Этот контраст порождает динамичность комического свойства. Хоукс придаст ей гораздо большие градус, оригинальность и оторванность от какого бы то ни было жанра в Хатари, Hatari!( обратите внимание, как меняется Джон Уэйн, против собственной воли влюбляясь в Эльзу Мартинелли). Режиссер потому так держится за свой сухой, непринужденный, саркастичный неподражаемый тон, что этот тон позволяет ему оставаться в некотором роде моралистом.
